I'm hoping that you're enjoying your week so far. I know for many of us and our clients, the news of the Cesar Chavez assaults on girls and women has been extremely triggering. This month's EMDR insight is about nurturing that inner child who is triggered.
EMDR Insight of the month:
Nurturing that wounded inner child with EMDR: Even if you're not a child therapist, as an EMDR trauma therapist, you will be working with inner wounded children. They can come up during reprocessing of those touchstone childhood trauma events or memories that link back to them. These are the top 2 questions that I notice that there isn't a lot of movement once a very difficult emotion or inner child part is coming up. Most times it's toward the end, because of course I've been *trying* to stay out of the way for the most part. But when we're coming to a close (stage 7) or noticing looping in the reprocessing, I ask the questions below:
1) what do you think that child or those emotions are trying to tell you? 2) what do you think that child or those emotions need to hear from you as a safe, wise, nurturing adult in its life, with all the wisdom and experience you have now?
These questions help with moving the needle toward self-compassion as children and also in the present.
Does this resonate or spark up questions in you? Let me know! Always happy to set up a consultation so we can EMDR-nerd out together.

EMDR Resource Spotlight
May 2, 2026 I'll be participating in Compton Wellness Collective's Grief Conference. I'll be doing a professional development talk for mental health therapists on the topic of Forced Separation given the ICE raids, deportations and kidnappings. The talk is called, "When Fear Becomes Reality and Delivers Grief," which is a continuation of my "When Fear Becomes Reality" which is available on-demand here.
A few years ago I was working on creating a kids grief workbook, but then didn't finish it. With the conference coming up, I wanted it to be offered for the community. So I went ahead and finished it. I've been using the prompts with my adult clients who are working on their grief from childhood. They appreciate the child reference.
I'm offering all therapists who purchase this workbook a free pdf copy when you email me your proof of purchase. This way, you don't have to make copies of the book, you can simply print from the file. I would encourage your clients to have their own books as it will serve as a memory keepsake for them.
Are you in an agency that would like a training on grief in kids? Let me know. I'm available for trainings or consultations.
Lastly,
I just want to thank you all for reading this far and being a part of my network of care. Thank you for your heartwarming replies, letting me know how you resonate with the resources I share. But more than anything, thank you for doing this work alongside me. I hope you take care! This week, I'm taking care of myself by intentionally brewing te de manzanilla (chamomille tea) for at least 30 minutes, that's when it's the most potent, as I heard from Irelia Dominguez of Cosmic Rose Apothecary. It's been helping me achieve deeper sleep.
What about you? How are you taking care of yourself this week?

So many of us are sitting with clients who carry racism in their bodies. There's the client who stopped sleeping after the raids started in her neighborhood. There's the one who smiles through every meeting at work and then comes to session unable to say why he's so tired. Or like my neighbor's compadre, the one who is undocumented and is no longer able to do meet ups for pizza in the neighborhood -- for fear that he might get deported. Most of our training never gave us language for this,...
Hello Summer, Hello Sunshine! I'm super excited to share with you all the book cover for our book. Stand Up, Speak Up and Heal: Overcome Race-Based Traumatic Stress, Self-Advocate and Stay Grounded is a book written by three women of color, myself Sofia Mendoza, LCSW, Dr. Lisa Bolden @drlisabolden and Dr. Lizbeth Gaona, LCSW @drlizbethgaona. Together, we anchored onto the liberation and DBT and somatic practices that have helped guide us in our work with helping BIPOC clients heal from...
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I hope that you're tending to your mental health in the best way. I've been tending to my mental health by getting massages! May has been busy with events, talks, and project deadlines for me. Which means that I've been on the computer A LOT. I have so much tension in my neck and shoulders... and even in my calves and thighs. Pretty much everywhere. Yesterday I had my 3rd weekly massage and many parts of it were painful and other parts totally...
